Best Virtual Reality Game

Best Animation

  • Provides the best overall in-game animation experience
  • Demonstrates excellence, originality, innovation, creativity, emotion
  • All types of animation included (body & facial animation, stylized or simulation, stop-motion or mo-cap, 2D or 3D, etc.)
  • All subjects/objects included (human, robot, biped, quadruped, living or not)
  • Excludes any pre-render material

Best Art Direction

  • Visual consistency across all aspects of game production
  • Strong visual signature that is unique to the game
  • Top class animation, rendering and storytelling
  • High level of immersion in the game environment or story

Best Audio

  • Appropriateness to title / brand
  • Immersiveness
  • Quality of integration, quality of composition

Best Debut Game

  • Usability & playability

Best Educational Game

Best Indie Game

  • Usability & playability

  • Small, independent developer (< 50 full time equivalents)

Best Musical Score

  • Original composition
  • Created specifically for the video game
  • Quality of integration into the game
  • Enhancement of the game experience

Best Narrative

  • Story & vision

Best New Character

  • Demonstrates excellence in collaboration between character artist, writer, voice director and voice actor
  • Original, creative, and engaging
  • Creates an indelible impression and contributes to a compelling experience

Best Performance

  • Demonstrates excellence in performance featured in a video game
  • Quality of voice artistry
  • Quality of motion capture

Best Technology

  • Proprietary or licensed
  • Use of physics, lighting or SFX
  • Usability (was technology used efficiently?)
  • Usability (player’s perspective)
  • All submissions that will be considered are required to be an advancement in their respective field, developed in-house. Third-party graphics and physics engines and tools can be used, but it will be the implementation and unique aspects of the new technology that the developer built themselves that will be judged.

Game of the Year

  • Innovation and/or originality
  • Unique gameplay features
  • Overall presentation, production value and quality
  • The majority of the work on the game must have been completed in Canada.

Best Canadian-Made Game

  • The game across all genres and platforms that receives the most votes by the Canadian public for the Best Canadian-Made Game Award.
  • The majority of the work on the game must have been completed in Canada.

Best International Game

  • Innovation and /or originality
  • Unique gameplay features
  • Overall presentation, production value and quality
  • The majority of the work on the game must have been completed outside of Canada.
